What do you give a cup about? What is important to you?? I “give a cup about” many things but at this time in my life I would have to say, DISEASE PREVENTION is at the top of my priority list!! My extended family has a history of Breast Cancer (my mother and her mother). Thank the lord, my mom found her cancer and had treatment which included a mastectomy. She has been cancer free now for about 5+ years which is a total blessing!! My father was recently diagnosed with Kidney Disease and will eventually need dialysis. It is these reasons that I have made it a point to make some changes for myself and my family.
Here is what I have done to make simple changes:
1. Research – I have researched both diseases and found that there are some things you can eat or should not eat to help with prevention. For example, I found that cucumbers are good for the kidneys, that cancer cells do not like iodine and that sea salt is better than regular salt.
2. Excercise – With me being a High School and College Athlete this form of prevention has always been part of my life. Before our recent move, I even joined an Adult Field Hockey League as a form of stress release and a way to make me run to stay in shape. I still run at least 2 times a week, but I had to stop playing Field Hockey:(
3. Eating Habits - Now this has to be the hardest part…changing my eating habits!! For me, that means I need to eat more vegetables (which now include cucumbers), less sugar, less salt, drink more water and eat out less (FAST FOOD)!!
I have already implemented some of these changes into my life and have seen the results!! I am excited to say, I have lost 5 lbs. in the last couple of weeks!!! Along the way I have found new recipes (which I hope to share), a running buddy and cook more which means less FAST FOOD!
Make sure you visit Peet’s Coffee & Tea and let them know what you #GiveACup about!!! This week you can weigh in and let them know how you feel about “Boy Bands”:)
